Wednesday Roundup: Houston Dash shore up midfield

Also in today’s Roundup, Andrine Hegerberg signs with PSG, and Gemma Bonner is out for Liverpool for 2-3 months with ankle injury

Just one day after the Boston Breakers distribution draft, the Houston Dash announced today that they had bolstered their midfield with two new signings, Michaela Hahn and Allison Weatherington. Hahn featured in the 2016 NWSL campaign for the now-defunct Western New York Flash, after going ninth overall in that year’s college draft, scoring one goal in 13 games with the squad. She was waived during the following pre-season, and spent the rest of 2017 in the Cypriot First Division with Apollon Ladies F.C.

Wetherington had an impressive college career with the University of Portland, featuring in the All-West Conference First Team in two of her four years there. After going undrafted in the 2017 NWSL college draft, she spent 2017 playing for ONS Women in Finland, making four starts and notching one assist.

Andrine Hegerberg signs for Paris Saint-Germain

It was also announced today that Norwegian international and Birmingham City standout Andrine Hegerberg would be leaving her English club to join French side PSG. The 24 year old has been playing for her country since 2013, and has been playing professionally in Europe since the age of 16.

Birmingham City manager Marc Skinner had this to say of the move, “(Andrine) has been a pleasure to coach and everyone in the team wishes her well for her new venture. PSG will be getting a player that is extremely professional and will fit straight into their playing philosophy.”

Hegerberg herself said that “(Signing) with Paris Saint-Germain is a wonderful new step in my career. It’s one of the best clubs in the world. It offers an ideal setting to progress to the daily contact of the best players. I will be fully involved in this project to help my club achieve the ambitious goals it has set for itself.”

This move will open up the opportunity to play Champions League soccer for the midfielder, possibly even against her sister and international teammate Ada, who is a prominent player at PSG rival Olympic Lyonnais.

Gemma Bonner suffers ankle injury, will be out 8-12 weeks

Liverpool Ladies captain Genna Bonner sustained ankle ligament damage during their 2-0 FAWSL victory against Bristol City on Saturday, and will miss the upcoming 2-3 months of the 2017/18 season as she recovers.

LFC Ladies Manager Scott Rogers said of the injury, “To lose Gemma at such an important part of the season is a massive blow as she is such an important player and big leader for us. She has been playing some of the best football of her career this season, so this injury is especially disappointing.”

“However, this injury will give the likes of Amy (Turner) a chance to improve her fitness levels as well as giving Ellie (Fletcher) a chance to show that she is capable of playing at FA WSL1 level so we have to remain upbeat going into the final stages of the season”.

The Reds currently sit in 3rd place in the FAWSL table, and their next match is on Sunday February 4th against Watford Ladies FC
